# Sign: free DocuSign alternative

Sign is a free alternative to DocuSign with no limit on documents. Upload a PDF or paste a contract, add who signs, and send each person a private link. They sign in the browser with no account, and everyone gets the signed PDF with an audit trail.

Web app: https://sign-free.openapps.xyz/

- No limit on documents or signers
- No account for you or your signers
- Signed PDF with a completion certificate

## How it works

1. **Add your document.** Upload a PDF, or write or paste the text and Sign turns it into a clean PDF with a signature block.
2. **Add who signs.** Add each signer, then place signature, initials, date, name, text and checkbox fields where they belong.
3. **Send and collect.** Send each signer their private link by email or any chat. You see when they open it and sign, and everyone gets the signed PDF.

## What you can do

- Place fields on any page of a PDF, give text and checkbox fields a label, and make them optional.
- Copy each signer's link, email it from your own mail app, or share it from your phone.
- Sign your own document: add yourself as a signer, send, then open the menu next to your name and choose to sign on this device.
- Follow live who opened and who signed.
- Download the signed PDF with its certificate once everyone has signed. Each signer can download it from their own link.
- Void a sent document. Make a copy of any document to send it again.

Not available: signing order, a decline button, emails or reminders sent by Sign, bulk send and ID checks.

DocuSign Personal also sets a signing order and lets a signer decline. Sign does neither yet: everyone signs at the same time, and a signer who will not sign tells you, so you can void it.

## A record that holds up

- **Consent:** each signer agrees to sign electronically before their signature is recorded.
- **Audit trail:** when the document was sent, when each signer opened it and signed, and from which browser.
- **Fingerprint:** a SHA-256 fingerprint of the exact original document, printed on the completion certificate.

Electronic signatures are valid under the US ESIGN Act and UETA, and as simple electronic signatures under eIDAS in the EU. Some documents, such as wills, need more. This is not legal advice.

## For AI assistants

An assistant can send a contract it wrote for signature in one call, with no key:

```
curl -X POST https://functions.bounded.sh/apps/1da91c033c738ab74538d13d/api/documents \
  -H 'content-type: application/json' \
  -d '{"title": "Freelance agreement",
       "text": "# Freelance agreement\n\nSam Lee will design...",
       "signers": [{"name": "Sam Lee", "email": "sam@example.com"}, {"name": "Alex Kim"}]}'
```

It returns one private signUrl per signer, an adminUrl for the person you work for, and an ownerKey for `GET /documents/<id>` (who opened and signed) and `POST /documents/<id>/void`.

To let the person send it themselves, hand them `https://sign-free.openapps.xyz/new#title=<title>&text=<text>` (URL-encoded): it opens the editor with the draft filled in.

## Questions

**Is there a free alternative to DocuSign?** Yes. Sign is free with no limit on documents or signers. Upload a PDF or paste a contract, add who signs, and send each person a private link. DocuSign's Personal plan costs $11 a month billed yearly and includes 5 envelopes a month (checked October 2026).

**Is Sign really free?** Yes. There is no paid plan and no limit on documents or signers. Storing your documents costs very little, and OpenApps pays for it.

**Are electronic signatures from Sign legally binding?** In the US (ESIGN Act and UETA), the EU (eIDAS, simple electronic signatures) and most other countries, an electronic signature is valid when people intend to sign and a record is kept. Sign records who signed, when, with which browser, and a SHA-256 fingerprint of the exact document. Some documents, such as wills or some real estate filings, need more than an electronic signature, so check the rules for yours.

**Do signers need an account?** No. Each signer gets a private link and signs in the browser, on a phone or a computer.

**How do signers get their link?** After you send, Sign shows each signer's private link. Copy it into any message, use Share on a phone, or use Email to open a ready-made email in your own mail app. Sign does not send email itself.

**Can I sign a document myself?** Yes. Add yourself as a signer and send. Then open the menu next to your name and choose to sign on this device. You get the same signed PDF and certificate as anyone else.

**Can I reuse a document I send often?** Yes. Open it and choose Make a copy to send again from its menu. The copy is a new draft with the same pages, signers and fields, so you change the names and send it.

**Can I change a document after sending it?** No. Once sent, its pages, signers and fields are locked, so everyone signs the same thing. Void it, make a copy, fix the copy and send that.

**Can I set a signing order?** Not yet. Everyone you add can sign at the same time, in any order.

**Who can see my document?** Only you (and anyone you give the admin link) and the signers you add, through their own private links. Links are long and random, so they cannot be guessed.

**Can my AI assistant send a document for signature?** Yes. Sign has a public API with no key. An assistant can create a document from the text of a contract, add signers and get back one signing link per signer.
